A FUNNY, GRUBBY MUSICAL WESTERN
I have always loved this musical despite it receiving fairly negative reviews upon cinematic release in 1969. It could be called an 'anti-musical', as the two male leads cannot sing; but I feel this adds charm, reveals more of their characters; and therefore creates an empathy with the audience. Harve Presnall as 'Rotten Luck Willy' is tremendous (what a voice), and the all-male chorus is sublime. Highlight of the movie: the 'Maria' sequence. absolutely brilliant. good storyline, well acted. the singing of clint eastwood and lee marvin should,nt really work but it works perfectly. a great musical score throughout the film with stunning scenery. what,s not to like? a really feel good film.
